Dr. Anne Bailowitz, acting Chief Medical Officer of the Baltimore City Health Department explains, "When there's not disease in the community, that's the perfect time to build up your protection. Please complete the 2010 Census Form

"In two weeks you will be receiving a form from the Census Bureau to assist them in completing their count of the population of the United States. Here is why you should complete and return the form. ... MoreMike Hilliard - Director, Community Relations HARBEL Community Organization 5807 Harford Road, Baltimore, MD 21214 Web Site: www.harbel.org Phone: [masked], FAX: [masked] 2010 CENSUS: The Census: A Snapshot • The U.S. Constitution requires a national census once every 10 years. • The census is a count of everyone residing in the United States: in all 50 states, Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands, Guam, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, and American Samoa. This includes people of all ages, races, ethnic groups, both citizens and non-citizens. • The 2010 Census will create hundreds of thousands of temporary jobs across the nation. It’s in Our Hands: Your Participation in the 2010 Census Matters • Every year, more than $300 billion in federal funds is awarded to states and communities based on census data. That’s more than $3 trillion over a 10-year period. • Census data guide local decision-makers in important community planning efforts, including where to build child-care and community centers. • Community planners and governments rely on census data to determine where there is the most need for additional social services and who gets needed funding, such as community development block grants. • Census data can help you estimate the number of potential volunteers in your community, the number of residents who may need your services, and can help in writing better proposals for grants. Completing the 2010 Census Questionnaire: Simple and Safe • The 2010 Census questionnaire asks only a few simple questions of each person—name, relationship, gender, age and date of birth, race, and whether the respondent owns or rents his or her home. This simple, short questionnaire takes just a few minutes to complete and return by mail. • The Census Bureau does not release or share information that identifies individual respondents or their household for 72 years. Why should members of community-based and social service organizations participate in the 2010 Census? Census data shape the future of your community and define your voice in Congress. • Census information helps determine locations for schools, roads, hospitals, child-care and senior citizen centers, and more. • Businesses use census data to locate supermarkets, shopping centers, new housing and other facilities. • Government officials use census data to allocate funding and grants to high- need areas and non-profit organizations. 2010 Census

"The "Take 10" Challenge - Tools to Inspire the Mail Back Participation Rates for the 2010 Census During the 2000 Census, 72 percent of occupied households mailed back their forms. In 2010, we are challenging communities to do even better. ... MoreThe Census Bureau's "Take 10" campaign gives us a wide range of tools to inspire our communities to meet our challenge. These include: • An interactive, map-based, "Take 10" Web site that allows local areas to track and compare their 2010 Census mail back participation rates, which will be updated on a daily basis at http://2010.census.go..., and to look up their 2000 Census participation rates. • An electronic toolkit is available which includes talking points, sample speeches, new releases, newsletter copy, event suggestions, flyers, stickers, and doorknob hanger templates, and more. • Suggestions on how to use friendly competition with other communities to inspire participation in the census. We can play an important leadership role in encouraging our communities to mail back their forms. Most 2010 Census questionnaires are delivered from March 15-17, 2010. From the time the forms are delivered until the closing of the mail campaign at the end of April, we have the opportunity to remind our area residents of the importance of mailing back their census forms. You can encourage participation through speeches, special events, and challenges. The stakes are high; an accurate count of the local population helps to ensure that your community receives its fair share of federal funding. This funding includes resources for services, such as health care, education, and roads. Community Members must complete and mail back their census forms between March 15, 2010 and April 15, 2010. The good news is that the 2010 Census questionnaire is one of the shortest in history-just 10 questions that only take about 10 minutes to complete. We hope we can count on you to encourage participatation in the 2010 Census. Visit http://2010.census.go... now to see your area's 2000 Census mail participation rate and check the site daily for updates beginning March 22. The 2010 Census: It's in our Hands. Preparing for More Winter Weather

"Mayor Rawlings-Blake Announces City’s Efforts to Prepare for More Winter Weather BALTIMORE, MD. (February 4, 2010) – Today, Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake provided residents with an update on Baltimore City ’s snow preparations. ... MoreThe Department of Transportation’s snow removal effort will include more than 300 essential personnel, 120 fully-functional pieces of equipment and 10,800 tons of salt. City crews are continuing to remove large snow piles and continuing snow melting operations. “While I’m praying for no snow, I want to assure the citizens of Baltimore that we are working diligently to prepare for the next snow storm,” said Mayor Rawlings-Blake. “The City’s snow truck fleet can take a licking and keep ticking, thanks to the hard work of our mechanics at the central garage.” Forecasters are predicting between one to five inches accumulation of wet snow and slush. The Baltimore City Snow Team, which includes the Departments of Transportation, Recreation and Parks, Public Works and the Mayor’s Office of Emergency Management, coordinates all preparations for winter weather in the city. Working out of the Transportation Management Center , the Snow Team will monitor the storm as it approaches the region and issue warnings and alerts as necessary. Mayor Rawlings-Blake urged all residents to listen to radio and television for updates. Those interested in additional information and throughout this weather event can visit www.396snow.com or call the city’s snow line at 410-396-SNOW. Residents are asked to refrain from driving during inclement winter weather unless necessary. Those who must drive are asked to clear their vehicles of all snow and ice for the safety of themselves, other motorists and pedestrians. During a snow emergency, the Department of Transportation will advise the public on road conditions and regulations through its Snow Emergency Plan phases. Residents will be better prepared following an emergency if they prepare a home emergency supply kit containing a portable radio, a flashlight with extra batteries, and water (one gallon per person, per day for three days), food and necessary medicines. Residents can visit www.readysetgood.org for more information on emergency preparedness. In the event of an emergency, dial 9-1-1. For non-emergency situations, 3-1-1 should be utilized for questions and assistance. “Please be sure to check in on your elderly or disabled neighbors and offer assistance,” added Mayor Rawlings-Blake.
